This collection of German casualty lists contains records of soldiers from the German Empire’s armed forces who were killed, wounded, reported missing, taken prisoner, or released during World War I, between 1914 and 1919. Compiled from official reports published by the Prussian government, these records document service members from the Prussian Army (excluding the Imperial Protection Force), Bavarian Army, Saxon Army, Württemberg Army, and the Imperial Navy.<br>Records typically include the soldier’s name, rank, casualty status, date of birth, place of residence, date of death (if applicable), and the date the list was published. These records provide valuable insights into the impact of World War I on German military personnel and their families.<br><br>The structure of these lists changed over time. Initially, names were organized under their respective military units, following an official ranking system. On December 7, 1916, this format was replaced with an alphabetical listing to facilitate searches and obscure troop affiliations. By August 25, 1917, the level of detail was reduced, with records containing only the soldier’s name, rank, birthday (excluding the year), and place of birth.<br>In late 1918, the lists returned to a unit-based organization, restoring full birth dates. The index for this collection was created by MyHeritage from scanned images of the original documents, making these historical records more accessible for genealogical and historical research.
